Auburn Council Hears Restrooms at Optimist Lake to be Locked Due to Vandalism; Approves Project Extension Requests

During the June 14 meeting Auburn City Council approved requests for delays on several projects and heard that increased vandalism to the restrooms at Optimist Lake has led to the decision to lock the building, except on special occasions when a responsible party can obtain the key to unlock the restrooms.

It was reported that an inability to oversee what happens to the restoom building on the Nemaha County Fairgrounds near Optimist Lake has resulted in vandals causing damages in the thousands of dollars to the facility over time. With no solution obvious with the exception being to lock the building, the council heard that step would be taken the next day. All agreed that action was something which they wished wouldn’t be necessary, but it appears to be so at this time.

A request by Brandon and Leah Wehenkel for an extension to complete a new construction housing project was approved until December 31, 2022. The initial deadline was July 2021 but the current increase in lumber prices has led the Wehenkels to delay the start of construction. They indicated that as lumber prices have nearly quadrupled, the lumber cost alone would have been $60,000 more than the original amount expected. They plan to build their home in the Glenrock Addition once the lumber prices return to a reasonable amount.
